Lake Ndutu is actually in Serengeti National Park but Lake Masek lies in Ngorongoro Conservation Area. Waters of these lakes are extremely saline and unsuitable for human consumption. Animals sometimes drink water from these spots. Most of the water evaporates during the dry season. Animals that are seen around Ndutu are wildebeests, zebras, elephants, dik dik, warthogs, giraffes, flamingos, antelopes, lions, leopard, cheetah, silvery backed jackals, heartbeest, elands, topi, Thomson gazelles and Grant gazelles, rabbits, mongoose, reptiles, cape buffalos, wild dogs, baboons, monkey, velvets monkeys, 500 species of birds and butterflies.
